Dreams and Nightmares

Maclean's  has posted an article 'The American Dream Has Moved To Canada'.  It may be so but it appears the American Nightmare of racial intolerance and hate crimes has moved here as well.  We hear daily about one atrocity or other.....shooting at mosques, bi racial families being harassed, a small child in a schoolyard subjected to racial slurs from a passing 'adult'.  What is happening people?
Has it always been here and we are just hearing about it more now?  Is it a global 'illness"?

  1. Sadly I fear it is.
We don't (thnnkfully) get the shootings here (or very rarely) but we do get the nastiness. Including from some people who should know better.

  2. There is outrage and discrimination all over the world and always has been.

  3. I did not think it would happen in my town but yesterday I read about an anti-Semitic leaflet was being distributed around the neighborhood. I do not understand why this is happening and am truly frightened about all this hate that now has a voice.

  4. Sadly, I think it has been, is, and always will be with us because people have the capacity for all behavior, good and bad. There have been times and places where it's more obvious or less obvious, depending on such things as general public attitudes and kind of government. There is also the role that parental influence plays; that was probably stronger in the past. Today peers may have more influence because social media allows them to be together, virtually, so much of the time. As for more violence and hurtful acts being carried out, I think some people are acting on their feelings more now, because it seems to be condoned by those in powerful positions. And that influence spreads faster, and its results are seen by more people, due to the reach of both regular and social media. The only answer I have at the moment is to renew our efforts to speak up and speak out, to have the voices of reason heard as loudly as the voices of hate, and to support those in our small circles as well, those who may suffer because of the new "freedom" to speak one's mind or act on one's baser impulses ... Off my soapbox now. This is a huge topic.

  5. "...racial slurs from a passing "adult"..
An adult who should know better but probably learned it from the adults in his or her own home.
It's the adults who have to stop this nonsense if the children are to learn to get along with everyone.
Look at the littlest kids in a schoolyard, babies in a daycare centre, they all just play together, none of them caring what colour the others skin is.

  6. We are living with so much more social media then ever before, so yes ... we are hearing about the good, the bad and the ugly.
It is a shame there is so much ugliness in what could be a beautiful world.

    Spread the good ...
    Spread a smile ...

    All the best Jan

  7. It's always been happening...it's just these days we're inundated by news bulletins every hour (and more), non-stop, repetitively 24/7.

  8. Your story was great. I am happy that she found an attraction to the geek and only hope that she still won't end up hurting him. The world is the same as it has always been, we just hear more with constant news report.
